The clock struck three. Wearily, she removed the sheets from her feet and sat upright in bed. She glanced at him sleeping soundly besides her. She could hear his steady breathes clearly in the dark silence of the night. Putting her warm feet on the cold wooden floor she felt a chill down her spine. She sighed quietly and sat for a while with her head in her hands by her side of the bed.
“ I know I’ll spend nights looking at you and still won’t get enough. Even eternity would be less to keep me from seeing the most beautiful creature God ever made.”
“Oh c’mon,” she rolled her eyes.
“I am not joking!! See this is your problem. You just think everything I say is a joke!” he exclaimed agitated.
“ Sweetie that’s cuz u lie.”
“ You think I am lying? Fine. Think whatever you want. I am getting late, so I’ll see you later. And don’t forget I love you.”
“Won’t.”
Groping in the dim light of bedside lamps, she reached out for her glasses and felt the cold floor for her slippers. She walked sloppily to the kitchen, made coffee and sipped it quietly thinking about him.
“ You know he’s not worth it. Plus your dad has already chosen your fate. AND you yourself say you are playing around with him.”
“ yeah but mom..”
“ No buts..u heard me..”
The sweet scent of wet grass and mud diverted her from her thoughtful demeanor. She glanced out the kitchen window. She could see streaks of rain streaming down the glass. Tears rolled down her cheeks too. The same cheeks that lighted his day, cheeks that he touched and felt new, cheeks that could still feel his tender touch, those same cheeks were now forlorn and damped with tears. If only she would have taken him seriously. Who would want to live her life anyway? She sipped the last of her coffee and retired to the lounge with some files at hand to keep her busy till dawn.
The sound of him humming in the shower woke her up at morning. Hastily she cleared her files and went to prepare breakfast. As she kept his eggs and milk on the table she heard a loud screech in the street. Peeping out of the window she saw a man at some distance standing with his back towards her. He was dressed in black and seemed to muse about his damaged car. It had hit her neighbor’s trash bin outside and shortly after she could hear the angry man next door come out to lay his hands on the culprit.
“losers ,” she thought. Then she heard him come out of the shower. She went in to for her turn and shortly after they were both ready for work.
